HANDLING PLEXUS® ADHESIVES DURING WINTER MONTHS
PlexusÒ methacrylate adhesives are a
mixture of acrylic monomers with elastomeric and polymeric toughening agents. When
some of these adhesives are stored below 32°F for an extended period of time the mixture will phase
separate. This phenomenon is completely reversible. If the freeze indicator in
your shipment has turned colors be aware that there is a potential the adhesive
could have separated. This freeze indicator changes color if it is exposed to
temperatures below 32°F for less than a minute. However it takes a relatively
long period of time, typically days, for the products in the shipment to
freeze. That is why these indicators only make people aware of potential
problems.
What to look for:
An adhesive
that has been frozen will be:
-
Thicker than normal and/or
-
Have a “cottage cheese” like appearance
What to do:
Allow the adhesive to reach room temperature by storing at
room temperature before using.
It takes a relatively long time for large quantities of
adhesive to freeze. It will take an equal amount of time for the adhesive to
reach room temperature.
Approximately 1-2 days for 380 ml cartridges
Approximately 4-5 days for 5 gallon pails
Approximately 7-10 days for 50 gallon drums
What not to do:
Do not try to heat the
adhesive by placing it in an oven or placing band heaters around the perimeter
of 50 gallon drums. This will harm the adhesive close to the wall of the
container.
What Plexus is doing:
- When ever possible we are shipping our products in heated
trucks.
- We are placing
freeze indicators on every shipment to make our customers aware of potential
problems.
- We are improving our
adhesives to make them easier to use.

ITW likes
to protect inventions with patents. ITW also recognizes that just because an invention
is patented that it may not always generate useful sales. As a result, they
have created an award for inventors who patent ideas that are successful and
generate sales of over $10,000,000.00.
At the ITW
Patent Society meeting May 2007, presentations were made by David Parry,
Executive Vice President of ITW Performance Polymers. There were about 200 employees who received
an award for their first patent. There were only 5 ‘Special
Awards’. Don Gosiewski, Plexus Research Manager and, Ken Lambert, Plexus
General Manager received one of those special awards for the long open time
adhesive patent covering MA590 and MA560-1. In a very short time, Plexus®
sold over $20,000,000.00 worth of MA590 and MA560-1. This is Don
Gosiewski’s third special

ITW Plexusâ Announces Revolutionary 1:1 Technology
for Bonding of Large Composite Marine Structures
Many advantages seen
through the use of 1:1 technology
APRIL 2003 - ITW Plexus® announces the introduction
of 1:1 ratio methacrylate adhesives for structural bonding of large composite
structures fabricated in the marine industry.
Two products have been released: MA560 and MA590 with more formulations
scheduled for future release.
MA560 has a working time of 60
minutes while MA590 has a working time of 90 minutes. Both can be dispensed in large masses and
bonds gaps of up to one and one-half inches.
“We’re very excited about this technological breakthrough. The long open times, anti-sag properties, the
ability to cure in large gaps without boil, small gaps without worry of
inconsistent cure, all while being packaged in a 1:1 formulation once again
demonstrates why Plexus® is the leader in Methacrylate
technology,” said Pat Shannon, National Marine
Accounts Manager of ITW Plexus®.
Another
significant advantage associated with the 1:1 products is the high dispensing
rates; up to 2.2 gallons per minute. “Dispensing rates are especially critical when bonding stringers larger
than 28’ in length. The increased dispensing
rates along with the extended open times allow a manufacturer plenty of time to
dispense and fixture large stringer assemblies”,
MA560
and MA590 were initially designed for the installation of composite stringers.
However, because of there ability to consistently cure in small gaps, these
products are also well suited in applications such as deck and hull joints or
radar arch assemblies where bond gaps are typically very thin.
The 1:1
technology uses a non-geroter metering system that simplifies maintenance. It also allows for easy hand mixing for field
repair or for smaller users who are not ready for the purchase of metering
equipment.

NEW LOW-ODOR METHACRYLATE ADHESIVES
ITW Plexus has added new
low-odor adhesives to its line of Plexus Methacrylate structural adhesives for
bonding engineered thermoplastics, composites, FRP, metals, and dissimilar
materials. Known as the 900 Series, these new adhesives provide the unmatched
convenience, ease-of-use, and performance of standard Plexus Adhesives with 90%
less odor. Plexus Adhesives, like all acrylate-based adhesives, have a
distinctive odor which is completely safe, but which some people find
unpleasant.
Plexus Adhesives have been
widely used in the automotive and marine industries for over 15 years, and
workers in these industries are accustomed to the smell. However, as the use of
the adhesives expands into global markets, odor has become more of a concern.
ITW Plexus Business Manager, observes, "The perception of odors is highly
subjective. What some people like, others find bothersome. Similarly, we have found
the characteristic odor of methacrylate adhesives to be more troubling in some
countries than others. This new line will make working with Plexus Adhesives
more agreeable in those countries, environments, or situations where the odor
of our standard products is a concern."
Environmentally friendly,
Plexus Adhesives have very low VOC emissions (less than 1%) and are 100%
recyclable. They can be reground without having to cut the adhesive away from
the part. Approved for use by virtually every major vehicle manufacturer, these
durable adhesives have been used to bond more than 5 million plastic automotive
bumpers with zero failures. For more information, contact: ITW Plexus,
